    phonetic alphabets
Transactions on the telephone have always been a problem for me, especially when I have to spell out my name. Untill today I had never taken at a look at the NATO phonetic alphabet chart, though I had picked up a handful of them from movies and friends. I was quite surprised to see a few of the words, for eg. 'India' for 'I' and 'Papa' for 'P'.

    Lords of the dogtown :)
After a lot of planning and waiting i finally went ahead and bought this today! :)

    (No, not the Segway :p)

Its a standard skateboard deck (without any intricate artwork to save cost), with larger wheels (the ones in longboards), and a taller truck.

My expertise at this point of time is restricted to scooting at moderate rates, making controlled turns, and landing on my feet whenever i lose control :p we have a couple of guys in our lab with pretty advanced skills, and they have been doing a pretty good job of conveying the basic idea of skateboard dynamics and how tricks can be learned. I dont see myself doing the tricks anytime soon though. Just scooting around the university campus (using it to go to classes) will be a pretty good experience :)

My last day at my first job..
Today is my last day at ThoughtWorks. It has been a fascinating two-years to say the least.

I didn't have to experience long tiring days, pokey-haired bosses and documentation. Life was lively, and I enjoyed it. I know everyone's name in the office, and I am sure everyone knows mine. And the most important thing for me; I didn't have to spend my days in a 10' x 10' cubical prison :)

Now its time to move on and try something which is dearer to my heart. So if all goes well, I head to the University of Southern California on August 6th. Life is pretty much unplanned from here...

    The Joy of Toys
My colleague, Jez, owns a beauty. A Kurzweil stage piano. Now, the fact that he's a Jazz pianist is a different thing, but heck, I had been eying that beauty for quite sometime now. It used to occupy a corner in his apartment. its a KURZWEIL for Gods sake!!!

So, Jez decided to go on a 3 weeks vacation, a hint at the right moment, and voila! here I am, with its possession for long enough to get bored of it (hopefully)

my room looks cool for sure

    how to 'fix' a DVD
Well, this weekend I borrowed a DVD from my library at Kormangala BDA. I did get an original DVD; a copy of an original DVD actually. It was getting stuck every now and then. So I got pissed off and decided to do a bit of cleaning up. My standard procedure is a layer of deospray/after shave wiped off with an optical lens cleaning cloth.

I couldn't find my deospray. I saw a thinner that came along with a correction ink bottle on my table. I applied a layer, wiped it off, and the bloody DVD came off with that. There were these nice deep grooves all over. I checked the constituent of the "thinner" and it turned out to be Toluene. Now I have to pay close to 200 bucks for that DVD which was 'The Shawshank Redemption'. Feel bad that i actually screwed up a nice movie.

Robotics and Rocketry club at PESIT
On November 19th 2005, PESIT finally launched its 'Robotics and Rocketry' club. [info]mrinal and I were present at the launch (also to be felicitated for our "achievements" in robotics). The launch itself was pretty interesting, with 3LER being programmed to press a button which would launch a model rocket. I had to build a prototype of 3LER in little more than a night, for this launch. The rocket platform was built by our juniors in close collaboration with us. Overall, it was good fun, and everything went smoothly. watch the video here.

Not so long ago when we were in college, I once presented a proposal to our management for the formation of a robotics club. I got but didn't go ahead with it at that time. I still don't understand the reasons, but it was perhaps because I loved my freedom, and with or without a club, we were still doing our stuff, and enjoying it like crazy. Perhaps it was also because we were too busy with COMRADE by that time.

However, after I passed out, I had been helping a few juniors with the design of robots. Now I am actively involved with this club, and we already have two important competitions lined up.The maze-solving robotics competition, MicroMouse at IIT Powai in January 2006, and India wing of RoboCon at Nirma Institute of Technology in March 2006. Both the events are something we always wanted to participate while in college, but couldn't because of various reasons.

I am now helping our current juniors design and build robots for the event. After a year at the "enterprise" world, this is heaven.

If anyone is interested to contribute/help/be-involved in the events, please barge in. This is as good as it gets :)

    Dear Santa...

    Dear Santa,

    This year I've been busy!

Last Saturday I didn't flush (-1 points). In February I had a shoot-out with rival gang lords on the 5 near LA (-76 points). Last month I bought porn for [info]amitng (-10 points). In August I set [info]umang's puppy on fire (-66 points). Last week [info]achitnis and I robbed a bank (-50 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-203 points). For Christmas I deserve a lump of coal!

    Sincerely,

    general update
MS application deadlines are so close i can hear them burp. Finding it kinda difficult to manage the process along with work, which is, ummm, not particularly interesting at this point. Took a few days off, but again tomorrow(today) i have to be at work, and this kinda breaks the flow i need to finish my SOP :-(

Got hold of a 7 octave Electric Piano with weighted keys from a friend. It had some minor power supply issues. Fixed them and as a part of the deal, i get to keep it for a few days. Its amazing fun playing on weighted keys

ghosts and mindblocks are back. wrong timing i would say. anyways, i have this cycle, wherein i fleet through a few months, and am in this weird state for another. will get through this one as well

had taken yesterday and today off for apps. Spent this afternoon at MG road Bangalore Habba stretch. It was a nice change from my claustrophobic dark room. Got me into a mood to add more words into my SOP. Later on in the afternoon I met an amazing ex-colleague, Ravi Mohan. It was a few hours well spent. Had been planning to meet him for quite some time. Got a lot of insight into AI, continuation, interpreters, ASTs, LISP related stuff, guitar playing, and general life experiences. Looking forward to seeing him again

damn, i want to take a break

    Have you seen my data?
Thought of running some legacy code i had written in first year of engineering to control this robot i had made called 3LER (read "thriller"). it used to run on this thing written in TurboC++ under win98

Unfortunately, WINNT, WinXP etc doesn't allow free hardware access (stuff like parallel port, game port). Hence i ventured out to install whatever was lying close to me, some old win98 version

and bloody amazing. i lost my partition table (my fault, did something dumb). now, it just shows 70+ GBs of unpartitioned drive. And i have code, loads of snap, and god knows what else which I haven't taken backup of :-(

Now i am sitting and trying my luck with google, and downloading freeware to retrieve my lost partitions and data

    any suggestions on this?

The Rahman Concert: In the Flush
    So ya
    Thought ya
    Might like to
    go to the show
To feel the warm thrill of confusion
    That space cadet glow
Tell me is something eluding you sunshine?
Is this not what you expected to see? .....

Well. Even the rain seems to be a big fan of Rahman. Has it ever rained this crazy since it judiciously spoiled the show of some well known clown-who-thinks-he-remembers-how-to-act at Chinnaswamy stadium a few months back ?

Luckily I had carried my umbrella but even that didnt help much considering the gusto and the multitude of directions in which the rain decided to arrive at the venue. The show was supposed to start at 7pm. Even at 8pm, people had no clue regarding the show's status. No announcements were being made. Hah! how could someone even operate an amp (forget the PA) after such a rain. Even the electrons would have been drenched to the core

However the PA was still working, and some guy announced that Rahman was still interested to go ahead with the show...and then struck another bout of terrible rain!

.......And we're going to find out where you fans
    Really stand
